Pro Badminton Academy runs weekly badminton lessons across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for players aged 5 and up, from children picking up a racket for the first time to juniors in the Victorian state team. Every new student starts with a 2-hour trial class costing AUD 40, where a coach teaches beginners the basics or assesses experienced players and places them in the right group.

Group classes run for two hours with no more than eight students per coach, at venues in Blackburn North, Mount Waverley, Doncaster East, Doncaster and Bayswater, plus a new adult group in Nunawading. After the trial, players pay AUD 40 per casual session or buy a 10-session card that can be used over 13 weeks. The academy was founded by Ong Beng Teong, a Commonwealth Games doubles gold medallist and former World No. 2, who still coaches the academy’s most advanced juniors himself.

“Under-15 and Under-17 Victorian state team players currently
train at Pro Badminton Academy with founder Ong Beng
Teong, as of October 2026.”

OUR APPROACH

How is a player's level and
class decided?

A player’s class at Pro Badminton Academy is decided by a coach’s assessment during the trial, not by age alone. Experienced players are not told which class to join before the trial; the coach watches them play first.

01

Mini Squad

Pro Badminton Academy's Mini Squad offers Sunday junior training at Unique Badminton Centre with a 6:1 player-to-coach ratio.

02

Adult lessons

Dedicated evening sessions exclusively for adults, run separately from junior groups.

03

Private coaching

Book private 1-hour coaching sessions at Pro Badminton Academy by contacting Sue, who will match the player with a suitably skilled coach.

What You Learn

What happens in a
badminton lesson?

Each two-hour group lesson at Pro Badminton Academy combines technical coaching, footwork and match play, pitched at the level of the group.

“With a maximum of eight students per coach, every player
gets individual correction during drills rather than practising without feedback.”

Technical skills

Grip, serve, clear, drop, smash, net play and defence

Footwork & fitness

Court movement, speed, agility and endurance

Strategy & tactics

Shot selection, positioning, singles and doubles play

Rules and etiquette

Scoring, service rules and court conduct

Mental training

Focus, confidence and handling pressure in matches

What is the Mini Squad?

The Mini Squad is Pro Badminton Academy’s intensive training group for juniors who can already play well. Sessions run on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at Unique Badminton Centre in Mount Waverley, with six players to one coach on each court.

Because every player in the squad already knows the game, sessions are built around continuous drilling: more repetition of routines and drills, less stopping to explain, and a higher training load than a regular group class. Players join the Mini Squad by invitation after a coach has assessed them.

Are there badminton
lessons for adults?

Yes. Pro Badminton Academy runs separate adult classes, so adults do not train alongside juniors. A new adult group runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 to 10:00 PM at the academy’s new hall in Nunawading [VERIFY: venue name and street address]. Adults can also book private 1-to-1 coaching.

How does private
coaching work?

Private badminton coaching at Pro Badminton Academy is a 1-hour session with one coach. To book, call or message Sue, who matches the player with an available coach suited to their level. Private coaching suits beginners who want faster progress, adults, and competitive juniors working on specific parts of their game.

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Every session is engineered with disciplined progression. Because classes never exceed 8 players per coach, students receive live, continuous feedback rather than repeating mistakes.

A trial class costs AUD 40 for 2 hours. After the trial, group sessions cost AUD 40 each on a casual basis, or students can buy a 10-session card that is valid for 13 weeks. [VERIFY: 10-session card price]

Not at all. Complete beginners learn grip, movement and basic strokes. Players with experience are assessed and placed with others at a similar level.

Bring indoor sports shoes with non-marking soles, a water bottle and a racket if you have one. Shuttlecocks are provided, and rackets can be hired for a small fee.

No. Lessons are not tied to school terms. Students pay per casual session or use a 10-session card over 13 weeks, and can start at any time after their trial class.

Pro Badminton Academy does not run make-up sessions. Instead, the 10-session card can be used over 13 weeks, so a week missed for illness, a party or a holiday simply does not use a session. Students only add their name to the WhatsApp class list for sessions they will attend. A student who adds their name and then cancels at the last minute is charged for that session.
