TRAINING

What Do Children Do at
Badminton Camp?

Each three-hour morning is split between coached skills work and games, so children are learning for part of the session and playing for the rest.

Coaches create a supportive environment where children learn at their own pace. A child who has never played is not put on court against a club player; groups are set by age and ability on the first morning.

Skills development

Footwork, racket technique, coordination, movement and court awareness

Match play

Friendly matches and mini tournaments to put new skills into practice

Team activities

Group games that build confidence, friendships and teamwork

Prizes and challenges

Competitions and challenges with prizes to keep energy up through the week

5–17

Ages

What age can my child join, and do they need experience?

Children aged 5 to 17 can join, and no badminton experience is needed. The camp suits complete beginners, children who play recreationally, and young players who want to improve technique and confidence. Teenagers who already train are grouped with similar players so the coaching stays challenging for them.

COACHING

Who runs the coaching?

Camps are coached by Pro Badminton Academy’s Melbourne coaching team, led by founder Ong Beng Teong, a Commonwealth Games doubles gold medallist and former World No. 2. The academy trains juniors from beginner through to state level, and currently coaches Under-15 and Under-17 Victorian state team players. Camp coaches are the same coaches who run the academy’s term-time junior programmes.

Why badminton for a school holiday programme?

Badminton suits mixed ages because it is fast, low-contact and easy to start. Children build agility, hand-eye coordination, fitness, concentration and resilience, and because matches are short, every child gets plenty of court time rather than waiting on the sideline. It is also an indoor sport, so camps run regardless of Melbourne weather.
